CLINICAL INSIGHT

When to Use

When to Use

  • Comprehensive clinical trial baseline testing for new pain interventions.
  • Initial patient intake for comprehensive pain management clinics.
  • Tracking both pain intensity and functional disability simultaneously.
CLINICAL INSIGHT

How it Works

Scoring

  • Calculates two separate means: Pain Severity (4 items) and Pain Interference (7 items).
  • Separating severity from interference explicitly acknowledges that a patient's pain may remain high numerically (e.g. 7/10), but if their interference score drops significantly, the treatment is successful.

Practical Pearls

Functional vs Numeric Focus

  • Modern pain management focuses almost exclusively on the "Interference" score. Reducing pain to 0/10 is impossible in chronic conditions, but restoring sleep, walking, and work function is achievable.
  • A 30% reduction in the Interference Score indicates a clinically meaningful response.
