Section 1

When to Use

Risk Assessment

Forecasting timeframe to legal blindness
Determining aggressiveness of IOP lowering
Standardizing visual field (VF) decay rates
Section 2

Formula & Logic

Mean Deviation (MD) Decay

Normal age-related MD loss is approx -0.05 to -0.1 dB/year. Progression in glaucoma is typically categorized: Slow (< -0.5 dB/y), Moderate (-0.5 to -1.0 dB/y), and Fast (> -1.0 dB/y).

Section 3

Pearls/Pitfalls

Visual Field Reliability

Always check Reliability Indices (Fixation losses, False Positives, False Negatives) before acting on a decay rate. A single poor-quality VF can erroneously accelerate the calculated progression rate.
